Maybe I’ll cut Oprah a little more slack.
I ran across this article on CNN.com that republished an article by Martha Beck at Oprah.com (does she have to be on every cover?):
Levine noted that people who have physical emergency reactions often cope better with crisis, and show fewer symptoms of trauma afterward, than people who hold still. Stress compels action; in snafu situations, Mother Nature gives just one instruction to all her children, and that instruction is, “Move!”
Trying to make our lives stress free, pretending to “act the right way”, not accepting reality causes more trauma. That’s the essences of Negative Thinking. It’s using your natural reactions to your advantage. It’s not rigidly adhering to some contrived philosophy. It’s being adaptable, using the tools in your hands, balancing your life. Do I want you to be 100% negative? No! I don’t want you to be 50% negative. But I would like you to have more tools in your hands. Negativity is a tool. Just like thinking positive it. By using a blend of both, not only will your life be less troublesome, you’ll be more prepared for the inevitable, unavoidable troubles that happen in life!
